Board Hears Response to Intervention (RTI) Presentation

Implemented to improve achievement of at-risk students

January 13, 2006

On Thursday, January 12, 2006, Mike Noble, Director of the Ogle County Education Cooperative (OCEC) provided the Meridian CUSD #223 Board of Education with information regarding a new model of intervention for at-risk students that is currently being implemented at Highland Elementary School. Response to Intervention (RTI) utilizes an approach that initiates interventions for at-risk students much earlier than traditional programs.  Utilizing assessment benchmarks, a trained group of teachers and support personnel meet to consider various instructional strategies for assisting students who do not meet prescribed benchmarks. These interventions are then implemented into the student's educational program.  More traditional models allow students to fail over a period of time only to be referred for special education services.  Several Highland School teachers, staff and principal, Joanne Hedemann, have attended training and are currently implementing the more proactive intervention program.  Mr Noble stated that the Highland staff is one of the earliest buildings to implement the Response to Intervention model.  After his presentation, Mr. Noble answered questions from board members regarding the program.  The outline for Mr. Noble's presentation can be seen by clicking here.

The next Meridian CUSD #223 Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 26th at the Meridian Junior High Board Room at 7:00 p.m.
