Onyx Assessment Upheld by Ogle County Board of Review
Decision significant for district finances and local property owners
January 19, 2006
On Wednesday, January 18, 2006, the Ogle County Board of Review heard the assessment appeal filed by Onyx, Inc.for the Orchard Hills Landfill located in Davis Junction, IL. After hearing testimony from legal counsel representing Onyx, Inc. and the Meridian School District, the Ogle County Board of Review voted 3-0 to keep the assessed value of the property at $8,633.000. Onyx requested a reduced assessed value of the landfill of $1,854,568. An assessment of $1,854,568 would have resulted in a nearly $300,000 loss to the school district in local property tax revenue and an increase in the school district's tax rate by $.04 per $100 of assessed value. Onyx has filed with the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board for the tax years 2003 and 2004. The Meridian School District will continue to provide the resources to protect the current assessment of the landfill.
