Board Passes Resolution to Intervene in Orchard Hills Appeal
Action taken to protect local revenue for District
January 11, 2008
For the fifth consecutive year, the Veolia (Orchard Hills) Landfill in Davis Junction has filed an appeal for the purpose of seeking a reduction in their assessed value as determined by the County. For 2007, the County has established the assessed value of the landfill at $12,561,674. In the appeal document, Veolia does not provide an opinion on their opinion of the landfill’s value, but from testimony from the 2003 Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB) hearing in August, it is likely they would request the assessed value of the landfill to be set in the area of $3,000,000. The loss of annual property tax to the Meridian School District could be over $450,000 if the assessed value is reduced to a level sought by Veolia. For the past five years, the district has been represented by Whitt Law in this process. The School Board's resolution in this matter authorizes Whitt Law to represent the district in the intervention of the appeal filed by Veolia. The Ogle County Board of Review is scheduled to conduct the hearing on this matter on January 17, 2008.
