On Friday, November 4, Meridian Junior High School celebrated Veterans Day.  During the shortened day, the students attended three different activities.  They wrote letters to be sent to soldiers overseas, they completed a mini boot camp ran by Mr. McCarty, and they listened to Dr. Robert Morelan, Superintendent of Meridian Schools and Amy Mershon.  The two shared with the students their experiences in the military.

The eighth grade students walked to the Stillman Valley Fire Department and listed to World War II Veteran, Bob Persinger.  He spoke with the students on his start in the military and shared with the students his photos from the war.  He was with the 3rd U. S. Cavalry with the Reconnaissance Squadron.  On May 6, 1945, Mr. Persinger was on a tank that entered a concentration camp in Ebensee, Austria to let the prisoners know that they were free.  His photos contained images from the concentration camp.

The day concluded with an assembly in the gym.  The Boy Scouts presented the flag.  The Girl Scouts led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance.  The 6, 7, and 8th grade chorus together performed, You Raise Me Up.  The advanced chorus which was comprised of 7th and 8th grade students sang America The Beautiful.  A duet of Kenzie Flynn and Savannah Giddings sang Amazing Grace.  The 8th grade band followed by performing Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and Armed Forces Salute.   Students were asked to bring a Veteran to the assembly.  Those students introduced their Veteran and let the school know what military branch they were in and if they had served in any wars and anything special they wanted to share.  They day concluded by having Justin Long, Courtney Gunderson, and Dylan Devries, members of Rachel’s Challenge,  thank the school for participating in the “Stack the Stage” and the dime drive.  Last year the students also wanted to use the extra monies from the dime drive to donate to the Alec Catherwood Memorial.  Mrs. Gretchen Catherwood and Miss Hayley Patrick were present to accept the $300.00 check for that cause.  “The band and chorus sounded great.  They worked real hard in two weeks to put these songs together, “said Kelly Gale, one of the organizers.

Stack the Stage was to have students bring in items to be sent to local soldiers overseas.  We have been collecting items to send to send and are collecting through November 10.    The school also held a dime drive.  The students brought in change to help pay for the shipping of the packages overseas and to donate to the Alec Catherwood Memorial.  Carla Miller, one of the organizers of the event was very pleased with the turn out.  “Our students are great.  They really stepped up for our soldiers.  Our school was decorated in red, white, and blue.  Students received either a red or white star for their donation to be placed on their locker.”  “This is the third year for this event and it keeps on getting better and better.”  Organizers Carla Miller and Kelly Gale would like to thank the students and staff at MJHS for their support and generosity for our soldiers overseas.  They would also like to thank the Veterans that participated in our event and for their service to our country.
