Board Votes to Appeal PTAB Decision
Ruling could result in $250,000 loss to District
January 16, 2010
At its regularly scheduled meeting on January 14, 2010, the Meridian School voted to appeal the recent decision of the Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB) to reduce the 2003 assessed value of the Veolia Landfill in Davis Junction. The reduction in assessment from approximately $8.6 million to $3.3 million would result in nearly a $250,000 loss to the Meridian School District.
The PTAB hearing on the 2003 assessment was conducted over seven days in August of 2007. After over two years, the ruling was finally made in December of 2009 and received by the District in the last week of December. The Board's decision to appeal the decision was made after extensive discussion with the District's legal counsel. There are also subsequent appeals pending before the Property Tax Appeal Board for tax years following 2003.
