Meridian CUSD #223 Wins Federal PEP Grant
The Cardinal Flight to Fitness

The Meridian School District is one of 76 sites in the nation, and only 3 in the state of Illinois, to be chosen as a recipient of the Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant.  This grant – the Cardinal Flight to Fitness (FTF) - will provide resources for the district to focus on emphasizing physical activity, cardiovascular fitness, and healthy eating for life.
Measures and statistical data will be required to be collected and shared with the US Department of Education but all information will be identified WITHOUT student’s names.  ALL information obtained in this research will be treated as confidential.  Data obtained from this study will be used for a statistical or scientific purpose with the student’s right and  privacy upheld.

Part of the data to be collected includes the monitoring of the number of steps students take per day using pedometers.  Each student will be asked to wear a pedometer for a specific period of time to track the number of steps they take in a day.

Monroe Center and Meridian Jr High School students will be using pedometers the week of January 24th.  High School students involved in PE and Health and Highland Grade School students in 1st and 2nd  grades will be using pedometers the week of February 6th.

Continual updates on programs and progress will be provided to students and families throughout this 3 year program.  If at any time you have questions, please contact Mrs. Kim Glendenning, Project Coordinator – Mr. Steve Steward, Project Director – or any of our district Physical Education Teachers.
