January Students of the Month & ZAP Info
Welcome to 7th Grade Class of 2023!
Dear MJHS 7th Grade Families:
We wanted to share some information with all of you regarding the ZAP intervention program that we put in place earlier this year. This program was developed to encourage students to complete their assignments/homework on time. ZAP, Zeros Aren’t Permitted, has been implemented since mid October. When we began we averaged more than 50 students attending ZAP a day! The numbers have been steadily declining with a little more than 40 students attending in a week.
Over the last few weeks the 7th grade teachers have added fun incentives to the ZAP program. If your student has no ZAPs in a week, they can attend a fun activity on Friday during their SOAR time. Last week we had 93 students eligible for the incentive. The students went to Ms. Arjes’ room and played a cup stacking game.
After taking a diligent look at all of the data we have collected from ZAP, we have decided we needed to add some additional supports and consequences to try and encourage our struggling students. Below will be some additional steps in the ZAP program:
If a student does not attend an assigned ZAP, they will have an after school detention the following day. You will receive a phone call letting you know they will need to attend. Detention is from 2:30-3:30. Your student would need a ride home at 3:30.
If a student must be zapped two days in a row for the same assignment, he or she will be assigned an in school suspension.
If a student earns 6 ZAPS in a quarter he/she will be assigned an ISS.
If a student earns 9 ZAPS in a quarter he/she will serve a 2 hour Saturday School.
If a student earns more than 12 ZAPs in a quarter he/she will serve a 4 hour Saturday School.
You will be able to see if your student has been assigned a ZAP by looking in their agenda. Teachers will begin to stamp the day a ZAP is received. If your student turns in the assignment the following morning, then they will not need to attend. In the meantime, teachers will continue to pass out the ZAP cards until the stamps arrive. You will begin to receive emails letting you know if your student served a ZAP. You will receive a phone call if your student skipped ZAP, and is assigned an after school detention the following day.
Please don’t hesitate to contact a 7th grade teacher with any questions.
